Austin Events in April

April brings warm weather, flowers, and these great happenings.

Edible Book Festival. April 1, 2013, central - Despite the date, this is no April Fool's joke. It is a culinary contest of food items that are related in some way to books, such as shaped like a book, or based on a book title, cover, or character. Entries include book sandwiches, seaweed leaves, cakes, hot dogs, and more. Voting ends at 3:30, after which sampling of the entries is permitted. Edible Book Festival

Carnival Ah!. April 2 - 5, 2013, downtown - Sponsored by Austin Community College. A four-day celebration of arts and humanities featuring live music, dance, drama, performance art, film screenings, a student art sale, literary readings, and philosophy and humanities discussions. Austin International Poetry Festival. April 3 - 6, 2014, southwest - One of the largest poetry celebrations in the U.S., this festival attracts over 250 registered poets from around the area and the world. It includes poetry presentations and readings, workshops, an all-night open mic session, a poetry symposium, and a youth anthology reading. Austin International Poetry Festival

Lonestar Round Up. April 4 - 5, 2014, east - A giant open-air car show featuring vintage cars and custom-designed and decorated hot rods from all over the U.S. Also includes an auto parts swap meet, dirt bike race, food vendors, shopping, and live music. Lone Star Roundup

Statesman Junior Dillo Kids Run. April 5, 2013, central - This one-mile run promotes physical activity among kids and also benefits a local charity. Junior Dillo 5K Kids Run

Heritage Homes Tour. April 6, 2013, various locations - Spend a day learning about Austin's past by touring historic mansions and homes and surrounding gardens in town. Heritage Homes Tour

Mayfield Park Trowel and Error. April 6, 2013, central - Learn about gardening, landscaping, and food production from selected guest presenters and sponsors.

Texas VegFest. April 6, 2013, east - Vegan festival featuring food sampling, cooking demos, beer, guest speakers, live music, and kids' activities. Texas VegFest

Zilker Garden Festival. April 6 - 7, 2013, southwest - A great place to see flower and plant displays and shop for outdoor plants. Flower show and contest, gardening talks, kids' activities, vendors, and live musical performances. Zilker Garden Festival

Austin Restaurant Week. April 7 - 10, 2013, multiple locations - Enjoy special, reduced price menus for lunch, brunch, or dinner on some of Austin's most beloved restaurants. A good chance to patronize one of your favorites or try out a new place at a reduced price. Each meal benefits Austin Meals on Wheels or another charity. Austin Restaurant Week

Old Settler's Music Festival. April 10 - 13, 2014, Driftwood - Held on the grounds of the famous Salt Lick BBQ south of Austin, this is Central Texas's premier musical event. Jazz, blues, bluegrass, and classic favorites by well-known performers from around the world, as well as arts and crafts, food and drinks, and camping. Old Settler's Music Festival

Unplugged at the Grove. April 11, 2013, south - An evening of free, live music, $3 draft beer, and food at one of Austin's best known restaurants. One of the longest-running free concert series in town.

Clean Sweep. April 12, 2014, various locations - Join over 4,000 volunteers to remove trash, debris, and fallen tree limbs from parks, creeks, and neighborhoods around town. Event includes free lunch, live music, a climbing wall, kids’ environmental activities, contests, and door prizes.

Longhorn Run. April 12, 2014, central - Sponsored by the University of Texas. 10K and two mile courses are available. Longhorn Run

Dog Day Afternoon. April 13, 2013, central - This free event includes dog races and contests, rescue groups, vendors of dog products, and kids' activities.

Austin 10/20. April 13, 2014, north - A USATF certified 10 mile run, with 20+ bands providing live music along the way. Austin 10/20

Art City Austin. April 13 - 14, 2013, east - A combination art festival and block party, Art City features a display of over 150 art works by nationally recognized Austin artists, local food trailers, beer and drinks, live music, and kids' activities. Art City Austin

Austin Jewish Film Festival. April 13 -19, 2013, multiple locations - Screenings of films about Jewish art, life, and culture highlight this week-long festival. There are also panel discussions and Q&A sessions with filmmakers. Austin Jewish Film Festival

Cine Las Americas International Film Festival. April 16 - 21, 2013, south - Choose from over 100 selected short and feature-length films from the U.S., Europe, Mexico, Latin America, and the Caribbean. All with subtitles. Cine Las Americas International Film Festival

Austin Reggae Festival. April 18 - 20, 2014, downtown - Arts and crafts, food, and of course, reggae bands from all over attract fans from throughout Texas and the world. Proceeds benefit the Central Texas food bank. Austin Reggae Festival

Funky Chicken Coop Tour. April 19, 2014, various locations - A chance to learn about starting your own chicken farm in an urban setting. Start at the information center and collect literature from vendors and a map, then go on a self-guided tour of chicken farms that various individuals and families have set up within Austin city limits. Austin Auto Show. April 19 - 21, 2013, downtown - Sponsored by the Austin Automobile Dealers Association, this event is for car enthusiasts and new car shoppers. Major car manufacturers show off their latest models, styles, and automotive technologies. Marvel Comics characters also make an appearance. Austin Auto Show

Diva Dash. April 19, 2013, east - A women-only 5K run over dirt, sand, and road with about a dozen fun obstacles along the way to test and build your athleticism. Diva Dash

Max's Ride. April 19, 2014, south - A motorcycle ride and live concert to support research and patient services for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig Disease). Includes silent auction and door prizes. Separate admission for just the concert is also available. The event is named for Max Harrison, a Desert Storm veteran who passed away in 2006 from ALS. Austin Earth Day. April 22, 2013, north - A one-day event to educate and inspire the public about Austin's green initiatives. Earth Day celebration includes speakers, exhibits, food trailers, kids' activities, green technology demonstrations, and more. Austin Earth Day

Moontower Comedy and Oddity Fest. April 23 - 26, 2014, downtown - Four-day lineup of performances by nationally known comedians. Happy hours at local bars are also included. Proceeds benefit Austin's historic Paramount and State Theatres. Moontower Comedy and Oddity Fest

Umlauf Garden Party. April 25, 2013, southwest - Enjoy the art exhibits and natural scenery at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden while sampling food and wine from local restaurants. Umlauf Garden Party

Eeyores Birthday Party. April 26, 2014, central Austin - A day-long event held on the last Saturday in April. This distinctively Austin event is a time to party, eat, shop, and listen to music, all for a good cause. Colorful costumes, live bands, and drum circles. Proceeds benefit local Austin charities. Austin Food & Wine Festival. April 26 - 27, 2013, downtown - For a weekend, experience and enjoy local and regional wines, beer, and food with tastings, cooking demos, and live music. Presented by Food & Wine Magazine. Austin Food & Wine Festival

Austin Dragon Boat Festival. April 27, 2013, downtown - A free event sponsored by the Asian American Community Partnership. This increasingly popular festival includes Lion/Dragon dances, games and Asian food, Chinese, Japanese, and Hawaiian dances, martial arts demonstrations, demonstrations by Austin-Travis County EMS and Fire and APD, and of course, a dragon boat race held on Lady Bird Lake. Hill Country Ride for AIDS. April 27, 2013, west - This is a benefit bike ride/run/walk through the Texas hill country to help support services for Austinites with AIDS. Hill Country Ride for AIDS

Texas Roundup 5K. April 27, 2013, downtown - A 5K run and one mile family run intended to promote health and fitness. Proceeds go to Texas public schools. Texas Roundup 5K

West Austin Studio Tour. April 27 - 28 and May 4 - 5, 2013, west - A chance to explore and appreciate the talents of West Austin artists. Tour studios, learn about artist techniques, and purchase original artwork to support the West Austin artistic community and businesses. West Austin Studio Tour

Heart O' Texas Orchid Society's Orchid Show and Sale. April 27 - 28, 2013, southwest - Thousands of orchids on display and many for sale. Orchid raffles, orchids, and related products for purchase. Heart O' Texas Orchid Society's Orchid Show and Sale

Schlotzsky's Bun Run. April 28, 2013, downtown - A 5K and 10K run for both casual and serious runners. A separate 1K kids' run is also held. Dogs are also welcome to participate. Top finishers get a cash prize. Proceeds benefit Austin Sunshine Camps, providing summer camps for underserved youth in Austin. Schlotzsky's Bun Run

Austin Dog Fair. April 29, 2013, north - A chance for you and your four-legged friend to have some fun, get some exercise, and show off your athletic skills. Demonstrations, an agility course, and pet shop exhibits are included. Austin Dog Fair
