Austin Events

"What's going on in Austin today?"

This page tells you about some of the major Austin Texas events that are coming up. One thing about Austin: regardless of the time of year, there's constantly something happening.

Austin's population is large, youthful and active, and with quite a diversity of interests. Whether you're into art, literature, science, history, education, computers, music, film, exercise, pets, nature, social issues, or something else entirely, it's a good bet there are Austin events designed with you in mind.

Austin's mild climate means that both indoor and outdoor events can be held at any time during the year. The Austin Marathon takes place in February, and Rodeo Austin is held in March.

Given the large number of functions planned and held in Austin throughout the year, you'll only stay home because you want to, and never because "there's nothing going on." We've lived in places where there was sometimes nothing going on. Austin isn't one of those places.

This and the associated pages give a sampling of some of the events in Austin each month.

South By Southwest March 9-18, 2012
SXSW is one of the most well known Austin events, and one of the most prominent film, music, and business conventions in the nation. Many notable films and businesses gained international attention through SXSW. Examples are the Academy Award-winning movie The Hurt Locker, which had its U.S. premiere in SXSW 2009, and Twitter, which gained wide recognition from its participation in SXSW 2007.

Rodeo Austin March 9-24, 2012
What's a Texas town without a rodeo, and Austin has a good one. This year's rodeo features bull and bronc riding, a BBQ cookoff, 14 live music performances by artists including Bret Michaels and Sara Evans, a black tie gala, and a carnival.

Austin Food & Wine Festival April 27-29, 2012
This strictly 21-and-over event features gourmet food and wine tastings at Republic Square Park near the center of the city. Nationally famous chefs and culinary experts like Iron Chef star Masaharu Morimoto will give classes on topics including grilling, sushi, Italian cooking, and desserts. Wine experts will teach attendees how to select and enjoy wine and stock and tend bar at home.
