Bryker Woods is an established neighborhood in north central Austin with mostly older, smaller single-family homes. Located just a few minutes drive from downtown and the University of Texas, and with well-known local restaurants in the area, the neighborhood is popular for its convenient location and its small-town atmosphere in the middle of the city.
Residents enjoy plenty of green space with parks and two golf courses in the area. The neighborhood has its own elementary school. Bryker Woods has some longtime residents and some younger singles and families attracted to the relaxed, natural environment and good location.
Bryker Woods was established in the 1930s to 1950s. It originally consisted of one-story wooden cottages, mostly three-bedroom or less. Today, those cottages still remain, mixed in with some newer homes. Despite growth of the city around it, the neighborhood retains its original, quiet, suburban feel. Nevertheless, the commercial development along the borders generates some noise and traffic.
The neighborhood is next to Hwy. 1 (MoPac) to the west and to the Shoal Creek Greenbelt to the east. So residents have easy access to the rest of the city by car and to parks and outdoor recreation. Shoal Creek has a hike and bike trail that leads to downtown, and Pease Park nearby has many amenities.
The neighborhood is also a short commute from downtown, south Austin, and the University of Texas. The central location also makes it equally convenient to north Austin.
The neighborhood tends to have good community spirit and active residents. The precinct the neighborhood is located in is known for high voter turnout. Residents are active in trying to maintain the neighborhood's original appearance and feel. The neighborhood association is also active and sponsors several annual events, including a neighborhood night out party and a Fourth of July parade.
Although the neighborhood is residential, residents have access to local dining and shopping establishments within walking distance along the borders of the neighborhood. The neighborhood itself consists largely of older, smaller homes and modest yards on narrow, tree-lined streets.
