Summary
Riverside is a larger neighborhood in southeast Austin just south of Lady Bird Lake and just east of I-35. The neighborhood is close to downtown and south Austin, and a hike and bike trail provides direct access.
The neighborhood itself has a reputation for being unsafe and for some drug-related activity. But a major urban development plan is in the works for east Austin including this and surrounding neighborhoods, which is expected to upgrade the area.
Features
Riverside is a conveniently located neighborhood offering low-cost housing, proximity to major local highways, and easy access to downtown and south Austin with their shopping, dining, and nightlife options.
The neighborhood is bordered by I-35 on the west, and E. Oltorf St. and E. Riverside Dr., two major thoroughfares, providing access to central and south Austin. The recently expanded Lady Bird Lake hike and bike trail also offers direct access to south Austin and Zilker Park, a popular location in Austin to enjoy the outdoors. Residents can also take advantage of the lake for boating and even to get to downtown by canoe.
Just to the east of the neighborhood are two other outdoor venues, Roy G. Guerrero Park and the Riverside Golf Course. The Krieg Field Softball Complex is also nearby, and Austin Community College has a campus in the area.
The neighborhood has a lot of strip malls, ethnic and fast food restaurants, and low-rent apartment complexes. There are also inexpensive rental homes. The neighborhood malls offer budget shopping, and there are grocery stores, laundromats, and other businesses.
The population is younger, predominantly in the mid-20s. About half are Hispanic, about one-quarter Caucasian. Many University of Texas
students and young professionals live here because of the low housing cost and
proximity to the university campus and downtown.
