Favorite Austin Restaurants For Sandwiches and Subs

Just about everyone likes sandwiches. They’re quick and easy to make, convenient to eat, relatively inexpensive, and available in a wide range of types limited only by the imagination. For a casual lunch, an afternoon snack, or a quick dinner during a night out, sandwiches are hard to beat.

Sandwiches are an international food, as witnessed by the variety of sandwich types available. On this page you’ll find places that serve Italian sandwiches, Greek sandwiches, Cuban sandwiches, Vietnamese sandwiches, and, of course, all different kinds of American sandwiches. Sandwiches are truly one food that seems to cross all demographic and ethnic boundaries.

A glance at this page shows there are lots of sandwich shops around town. This is because sandwiches are a perfect fit for Austin’s casual, grab-it-and-go lifestyle. Easy to carry on the run, relatively inexpensive, sandwiches appeal especially to Austin’s younger, more cash-strapped demographic (read: college students).

No matter whether you call them subs, hoagies, grinders, or Po Boys, one thing most everyone calls them is delicious. Stuffed with a variety of meats, vegetables, cheeses, and condiments, these elongated sandwiches are a filling, satisfying meal. And you can get one seemingly all over town. Everything from the major national chains to local delis serves them up.

So which Austin shop has the best sandwiches? That’s in the eye of the beholder. But we’ve narrowed the field to a few of the local favorites.

Our Favorites

Fricano's Deli
2405 Nueces St. Ste. G, Austin TX 78705

Sandwiches here go $8 and up, but the sandwiches are big and consistently great. Any of the grilled sandwiches are recommended, and the garlic herb roast beef, tuna reuben, and veggie with hummus are also good choices. Try the large chocolate chip cookie. They offer a frequent diner card. Casual atmosphere, with a large outdoor patio.

Little Deli & Pizzeria
7101-A Woodrow Ave. Ste. K, Austin TX 78757
(512) 467-7402

Excellent sandwiches (and pizza) here. Their menu is loaded with choices - subs, gyros, sandwiches, as well as salads, soups, and desserts. Can’t really go wrong with any of the sandwich choices – club, BLT, cheesesteak, pastrami, and veggie are all good. Try the local bread instead of wheat or white. Service is fast and attentive. Place is in a small shopping center with lots of parking and both indoor and outdoor seating.

The Jalopy Rotisserie & Press (food truck)
1502 San Antonio St., Austin TX 78701
(512) 814-8557

A food truck in central Austin that has possibly the best chicken sandwiches in town. The Son Hong chicken sandwich, the spicy Chipotle chicken sandwich, and the Vegan Thai with fresh vegetables are good choices. Friendly, personable staff and super fast service.

Toastie’s Subs
215 S. Lamar Blvd., Austin TX 78704

Toastie's Subs

A wide selection of sandwiches here, and all are very good. The Cuban, with moist pork and a tasty blend of mustard is popular. Also recommended are the Cali Club, Bambino, and Medi Veg. The atmosphere is attractive and inviting. Staff is friendly and efficient.
